Spring is in Full Bloom in Southern California

This is a Pineapple Plant.
Sadly it doesn’t actually grow pineapples. For some reason that’s just it’s name.
I planted it four years ago and to my amazement, every winter it dies and disappears entirely, and every spring it pops back up and begins blooming again.
I do not have a green thumb. Sadly.
But lucky for me our little family lives in a guest house at Nana and Papa’s. There are several fun signs of Spring popping up all around us to discover here.

Palm trees are always here.
This is California after all, and these are sturdy landmarks of loveliness all year round.

Last year Papa and Nana planted several new little fruit trees in the backyard that are now beginning to bloom.
It’s a lot of fun for the kids and I to inspect the new flowers blooming and guess what kinds of fruit they’ll turn into.
Remember I don’t have a green thumb and I know almost NOTHING about fruit blossoms.
Do you know your fruit blossoms?

Here is the guard.
Fierce I know.

Cherry Blossoms?

Peach Blossoms?

Plum Blossoms?

Apricot Blossoms?

Not Blossoms.

And take a look at this.
I have NO idea what this is going to be but I love it.
The quintessential spring bud.
Lovely.
We really should have some Avocado trees here.
An abundance of Avocados is one of the best things about living in California.
What kind of fruits grow well where you live?
Are they blooming yet?

These wild flowers have just started popping up.

By summer time there will be at least a hundred of them blooming on the front bank.
Do you have these Wild Flowers in your state? We take them for granted because they grow everywhere here, even along the freeways. They really are quite beautiful though when you take the time to appreciate their brightness and details.
Here in Southern California we also have another wild flower that grows on it’s own each Spring, but this one I never take for granted.
It’s particularly special to me.
Seeing these bloom each year is one of the things I look forward to most about the Springtime.

See all the lovely orange flowers?
Can you guess what they are?

Poppies.

Lovely, wonderful, happy, warm, bright…

California Poppies.
Our State Flower.
I love ‘em.
They make me smile.
What’s your state flower?
Is it growing at your house?
Do you like it?

Our backyard here is a haven for ladybugs.
I haven’t seen any butterflies yet but I’m sure they’ll be around soon.
I really wish we had lightning bugs here in Southern California.
We don’t.
I’ve never even seen one.
Do you have lightning bugs where you live?
Do you capture them in jars and make lanterns out of them… or is that just in storybooks?

These pretty little flowers are hard to see from a distance, but when you start looking for ladybugs in the grass, you notice these purple beauties are everywhere.

These spiky things are all over the ground too.
I tell my kids their purpose is to become fairy scissors.

Like this.
I loved making these when I was little and now every time we go into the backyard Remy, my three year old daughter, asks me to make some.

Cut, cut, cut.

Sand toys on the ground.

Pink cowgirl boots in the air.
Spring is definitely here.
Now I want to see and hear about all the signs of Spring popping up where you are.
