The Blueberry Farm

A few weeks ago we took a trip to the Temecula Berry Company, to pick our own blueberries.

It was such a cute place with rows and rows and rows of blueberry bushes, and a cute big red farmhouse where the owners of the farm live and work.

Every bush was covered in clumps of berries like this.

My four year old loved it!

She had a great time carrying around this little bucket they gave her to collect the berries in.

I carried around this pitcher.

My berry collecting tactic evolved from hand picking, to placing the bucket on the ground below the bush and striping clumps of berries off the branches straight into the pitcher.
After all… I had a lot of berries to collect.
We went to the farm on the last day of the picking season and they were running a special… pay $20 and collect as many berries as you want.

After an hour of picking in the hot sun, we came home with two groceries bags full of blueberries.

I washed them.

And then I had to pick off these little brown remains of the flower, from most of them. This part is a lot of work compared to when you buy blueberries in the store and they are already free of this little brown part.
Does anybody know how blueberries are processed? I’m wondering if there are laborers at conveyor belts picking these little pieces of the blueberries off. What a task that must be! Sheesh!
Once they were cleaned, and plucked, I had to figure out what to do with them next.
We’ve been eating blueberries raw.
We’ve been eating blueberries on top of yogurt.
We’ve been having blueberries in smoothies.
We’ve had blueberry pancakes.
I made blueberry scones.
And…
I did what I said, “I just don’t do.”
I knew it was only a matter of time until I gave in, and with this many blueberries, I had to find something else to do with them.

Yep.
I did it.
From scratch.
Limited counter space and all.
I know.
And guess what…
It turned out awesome!
I’ll tell you all about it some other time along with the recipe.
If I can do it, you can do it.
Limited counter space and all.
I can’t wait to take the kids apple picking this fall and make some homemade apple pie. Seriously. I’ve really turned a leaf with the whole pie making thing. I’m not afraid anymore. By Christmas time I might have just made every kind of pie known to man… because now… I can.
Here is a great website to direct you to a U-Pick farm in your neck of the woods.
And now I want to hear all about what kind of Summer Family Fun you’ve been having.
This is the last Summer Family Fun LINK up post for this year. Next week I’m headed into full Back-to-School mode.
So… here’s your final chance. LINK up any post from this entire summer, highlighting something fun you and your family did. If you want more info on the link up, you can get all of the guidelines here.
