A 2011 Update…
It’s been four months since I’ve created a new post for this blog. Sometimes life just takes over and you need a break from things. This blog has been a great outlet for me as a place of expression. I’ve had a great time running it and everything I’ve poured into it has just spilled out of me with such ease excitement. Over the last few months, I’ve felt less needful of an outlet, but have been starving for intake, and quiet reflection. I’ve been reading a lot, which tends to go by the wayside when I’m writing a lot… it’s ...

Got Morning Sickness? Still Need to Home School?
I've been through morning sickness three times while home schooling my oldest son through his elementary years. Two of those stages led to continued exhaustion as a sleep deprived Mommy with a newborn. The most recent stage of morning sickness led to several weeks of recovery both physically and mentally from a miscarriage. I’ve had days during these difficult times, when I couldn’t do much more than make sure my little ones were safe, fed, and somehow entertained, as I lay on the couch trying to hang on until daddy got home. All this while I was supposed to be home ...
Marvel Comics meets Swan Lake
I decided to show my kids how to make a snowflake with scissors and paper. This is the only picture I have of the snowflake because as you'll see soon enough... the focus did not stay on the snowflake for very long. As I was cutting the snowflake, I remembered how fun it also used to be to cut out paper accordion people. So, while my kids were "Ooooohing" and "Aaaahing" over my snowflake, I decided to make a link of accordion ballerinas. Yep. My kids were seriously impressed. I cut it out and then I asked Remy to color the ballerinas and give ...
How Is Your Child’s World Being Framed?
My Story I’ve always been a very creative person, interested in art, music, and writing. I was told often that I was good at those things by my peers and my mother, and their praise of my accomplishments in those areas spurred me on to become better and better at them. Adversely in my adolescence I was also told: I’m not a math person I’m not a science person I’m not a good speller I’m not a reader I would always struggle in school And for what? I thought. So I can get into a good college? What in the world am I supposed to do in college, if I’m barely ...
Ferdinand the Bull and Gratitude
Have you ever seen this Disney cartoon about Ferdinand the Bull? It was one of my favorites as a small child and I've shown it to my own kids many times. Ferdinand was different than all the other bulls. He wasn't interested in snorting and fighting and demonstrating his anger in as ferocious a manner as possible. Ferdinand preferred to "sit just quietly, and smell the flowers." I've really been trying to work on being more of a gentle mother, slow to anger, and softer in my speech and tone toward my children in the times when they exasperate me. I've found that the ...
